Now there’s a question that Hibari hadn’t expected. He blinked at Yamamoto for a moment before responding. “I don’t sleep in my own home.” He kept up the facade of being “happy” and let himself relax into the seat. “And you’re always sleeping at school as well.”

Not to mention HIbari was always getting into fights. Those wore him out after a while, no matter how little he showed it. Plus he was doing well in his classes, either way. And not only because of threats, either; Hibari actually did his work.

Hibari caught the shop owner staring at him again. This was one stand that Hibari had left alone, so he could understand why the shop owner was wary.

”Oh? Do you spend the night at friend’s houses a lot?”

That’s the only reason people wouldn’t sleep at their house, right? Or at least he hoped that’s why he wouldn’t sleep at home.

“Hahaha! Well I work hard with training! My nap time just happens to be during classes sometimes. I still keep up though. Tsuna, Gokudera and I get together to do homework sometimes~ I get it pretty quickly.” Hibari kept looking at the shop owner and the shop owner kept staring right back. The air was kind of tense too. He had to think of a way to make it stop before one or both of them snapped. What was so interesting about Hibari anyway? That guy didn’t even have that scary menacing air around him at the moment. Their ramen was just about finished so maybe that whole awkward staring thing would stop.

“Of course I don’t have a curfew.” What a ridiculous question.

Hibari sat next to Yamamoto on the stool closest to the wall. He was partially grateful that the herbivore decided to sit so far from the rest of the stools. If he had to sit next to a sweaty customer, he was going to lose it and probably bring this whole stand down.

He caught the stand owner looking at him, so Hibari flashed a small smile in Yamamoto’s direction and made it look like he was actually enjoying his company. He was sure it surprised the shop owner, as Hibari was known to not smile at all.

The smile was kind of unnerving because the only time Hibari ever smiled it was to signal that he was about to start fighting someone. No one had done something that was particularly offensive so he must be doing it to…hide something? To be friendly? Yamamoto laughed a little to try to go along with whatever it was that made Hibari smile. Even the usually dense Takeshi could see that the shop owner kept looking over in their direction. Did Hibari have some kind of unpleasant history with this ramen stand? He HAD tried to take their money that time that he ran a choco-banana stand with Tsuna and Gokudera.

“You’re always sleeping at school. Is it because you stay out late since you don’t have a curfew?”

That was a pretty big assumption since he himself slept during class all the time. Him sleeping was because he was awake and working hard since early in the morning though. Maybe Hibari did the same? Now was as good a time as any to find out if Hibari also worked hard to be a good fighter.

“That’s fine.”

Hibari’s eyes had slid to look at Yamamoto when he called him his ‘friend’ but he didn’t complain. In fact, Hibari decided to humor Yamamoto in front of his dad’s friend who owned the shop.

“Come on, Yamamoto, let’s sit somewhere.” Hibari flashed a small smile in Yamamoto’s direction, his eyes still harsh, as usual. With the reactions he was sure to get, this ought to be interesting.

He’s only doing this for observing how herbivores interact.

Yeah…observation only. That was it.

“Do you want to sit at the end of the row?” This was a ramen stand so all the stools were in a single place around the place where the old guy was preparing their lunch. Or was it technically dinner? Hibari had been pretty cool with being called a friend but had been a little rude by not introducing himself. Then again he practically ran the town so he might not NEED an introduction. Without waiting for an answer he walked to the darkest corner of the bar and took a seat on the stool second closest to the corner. Hibari would probably appreciate having to sit next to as few people as possible. This way it would also be possible to keep their conversation private. “You don’t have a curfew right?”

“I’m not ‘most people,’ you fool.” Hibari glanced back at Yamamoto. That dejected look he had on looked ridiculous and out of place on that normally-smiling face. It was annoying.

Hibari walked over to the stand, waiting with a slight sigh until Yamamoto was at his side before walking up to it fully. He looked at the menu quizzically. He hadn’t had ramen in such a long time, he didn’t know what to order. “Pick something for me,” he said to Yamamoto after a short look at the selections. Yamamoto was paying anyway, may as well get something he would like to try as well.

“That’s true. You’re a lot stronger than most people.” Not to mention more prone to bouts of wanting to destroy someone for almost no provocation. When the older gentleman who owned the shop finally turned to look at the two boys Takeshi put up a hand and waved jovially at him.

“Yo~! It’s been a while. This is…-” Yamamoto took a second to prepare himself for this next part, “my friend, Hibari. I caused him a little bit of trouble so I told him I’d treat him to some ramen as a way to make up for it.” Two broken windows only qualifies as a ‘little bit’, right? There was also that part where he almost hit Hibari with his baseball. And then the baseball team almost hit him too. “We’ll take two tonkotsu ramen. If that’s fine with you Hibari.” Hopefully he didn’t have some freak allergy to pork. It would be a pretty bad way to top off the day to have to rush a swollen and puffy Hibari to the hospital just because he didn’t ask.

“It’s not appreciation so much as…” Kaoru looked at the milk set in front of him. “It’s very good for the body.” He worked at getting that goodness out, popping the straw in and taking a sip. Yamamoto was already continuing, and he listened.

Hibari…he’d been the one to defeat Adel’s Diamond Castle, hadn’t he? He had been strange when he saw him on the roof of the school on their second day. From what Takeshi was saying, he sounded somewhat like Shittopi and Julie, though instead of not wanting to get involved, it was that they had their own things to do. Now that Julie was actually attending classes every once in a while, they saw him a little more often, which made Adel happy. “Shitoppi is hard to read unless you can get through to her, and Julie jokes too much to know what’s really on his mind…” He paused and took a bite of his eel. It was too delicious. Takeshi was a good cook! He was going to say something else, but instead he looked up.

“This is very good. You’re very skilled.”

“Yeah! See? Why doesn’t everyone realize that? They’re always saying stuff about how I got so tall but I couldn’t have done it without milk.” They would be very good friends at this rate since Kaoru shared his passions. “Shittopi….is that the one that Gokudera has been talking about for a while? With the balloon things?” She was definitely interesting. If Hibari was as lively as she was things might be different in their little group. Gokudera would actually like him for one thing. Awful and yet wondrous images of Hibari wearing the balloon things started flashing through his head as his eyes wandered up towards the ceiling.

Kaoru’s compliment brought him back down to earth. He smiled at his friend and scratched at his cheek. “Haha! Thanks!” He had the BEST teacher so it’s only natural that he be good at sushi.

“Hn. Your decision.” Hibari slid his eyes to go look at Yamamoto and then turned back away. He supposed it was best to let the herbivore pay, seeing as how his club broke two windows.

“Most people would be really excited to get treated to a free meal you know.” Yamamoto looked deflated. A small part of him had expected for Hibari to be more agreeable after receiving a friendly invitation. They had made their way down to the streets of Namimori and were heading towards the ramen stand owned by his family friend. Would Hibari take well to being introduced as Yamamoto’s ‘friend’? It wasn’t a lie. Yamamoto considered him a friend. That uncle from the ramen stand was pretty bubbly and exactly the type of person that got on the Cloud Guardian’s nerves. Please don’t let Hibari beat the poor guy up and destroy his shop.

“I didn’t say anything otherwise, did I?”

Hibari really didn’t know why this herbivore’s presence was getting under his skin. If he could handle Dino randomly walking up and hugging him, then he can handle an arm around his shoulder. It probably just caught him by surprise.

Touchy, touchy~ Looks like he was still mad about the windows. Or the cleaning part. Or that Yamamoto put his arm around his shoulders. Huh. Maybe it’s not so surprising after all that he’s in a bad mood. That just meant that it was Yamamoto’s responsibility to help his mood improve. He flashed a grin at Hibari as they made their way to the front of the school.

“I’ll pay for the ramen~ Consider it part of me paying for that window?”

That was it. That was it. How could a herbivore be so stupid. Hibari’s eye twitched as he hissed through his teeth, “I said you could do what you wished, but I assumed you had some sense of self preservation.” He lashed out with his elbow, connecting it with Yamamoto’s side sharply, the sudden movement jarring Hibird from his perch on top of Hibari’s head as he flew up in the air to circle them.

“Get. Off.”

With an oomph, Yamamoto staggered back, hand rubbing at the sore spot. What’s with that guy? First he says ‘do what you want’ and then he lashes out when he did just that. Time to take a different approach. Hibari should’ve seen the arm coming really. It’s usually what Yamamoto ‘wanted’.

“Okay, okay~ I understand. Sorry!”

It’s ‘do what you want with my limits in mind’ and not the free for all that he had understood earlier. If only he knew what exactly those limits were besides ‘don’t touch me’. Why couldn’t he just be clear from the beginning? Though it wasn’t in Hibari’s nature to be very open about what he was thinking. He was more of a show and not tell type of guy. For now, Yamamoto would settle with walking next to Hibari about a foot apart. That should be an acceptable distance.

“We’re still on for ramen though, right?”

Hibari’s eye twitched again. Why was he letting this herbivore’s presence get the better of him? Normally he could ignore even the most annoying of idiots.

He let out an angry sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose as he walked. “Whatever. Do what you would like.”

He walked slightly faster, Hibird coming to fly down from a nearby tree to land on his head.

‘Do what you like’? Was that an open invitation to be as friendly as he could? Cause that’s what it sounded like. It’s not like Yamamoto didn’t give him a chance to be clear on his boundaries. If he WANTED said boundaries then Hibari would have specifically said ‘you need to stay five steps ahead or behind me at all times’. Instead he was not only vague but also said that Yamamoto was free to do as he pleased and so it should be no surprise to the Disciplinary Committee president when he had someone hanging allll over his back in the twenty seconds following his declaration of indifference. Takeshi had an arm around Hibari in a friendly embrace as he walked them both towards the stairs. “I recommend the pork ramen~ It’s pretty great! Probably my favorite from that uncle’s stand. Do you like pork?”

He reached up an arm and pushed Yamamoto back by his shoulder. “Too close. Come near me again and I will not hesitate to tonfa you in the face.” He scowled as his eyes narrowed into a glare.

Yamamoto stumbled back a bit having been taken by surprise. “Ah. Is there a certain number of steps I should walk behind or ahead of you? So I know not to overstep your boundaries.” He was so demanding! Most people only complained about their personal space when Yamamoto threw a friendly arm over them.

“….” Hibari frowned. If the herbivore was going to talk through this whole ordeal maybe he should have thought it through more and knocked him unconscious on the stairs and had Kusakabe dump the body on his porch. He sighed slightly. “Whatever.”

“Is that a yes? I’m not proficient in Hibari speak.” But he might be after this outing! With a grin he moved in close to him so he could study his facial expression. Most of the time he looked bored so any type of change was probably a positive one! The opposite of liking something was indifference and not hatred, right? Was that how the saying went?

“If it shuts you up, fine.” Hibari walked faster. If this idiot was going to follow him, he’d give him something to follow.

“Wow, really?” He was surprised. Yamamoto had expected to have had to badger Hibari for hours before he finally accepted out of pure frustration. “Cool! Let’s go to the stand that’s about four blocks from here. It’s owned by one of my dad’s friends and he makes pretty amazing ramen~”

He sighed, “There’s no way you’re following me home again. Go home and study.” He hated having a ‘tail.’ Even if that person has helped them in the past, and especially if that person was an annoying kid that flashed his teeth too often.

“I’ve pulled up my grades just like I promised. I’m done with studying and it’s too early to head home just yet. We should go get some ramen or something!” Hopefully Hibari liked eating with someone else. And was in a good enough mood that making that statement didn’t mean he’d have to duck in about four seconds.

Hibari heard the steady foot falls of the baseball player behind him and turned his head slightly as he walked. “Are you following me, herbivore? Your duty is done, you can leave.”

“I don’t really have anything to do. It’s late and there’s no one really left in school but I don’t want to go home yet…,” and then Yamamoto trailed off as if to imply ‘which is why I’m following you’. Hibari was the only person around so he was now the designated person to have a conversation with.
